CHAPTER 5 The Genealogy of Reuben

1 And the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel -- for he was the first-born, but in the profaning the strewn bed of his father, [²was given ¹his rights of the first-born] to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel. And he did not trace descent for rights of the first-born. 2 For Judah was mighty in strength among his brothers, and a leader came from him, and the rights of the firstborn was to Joseph. 3 The sons of Reuben first-born of Israel -- Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 4 The sons of Joel -- Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5 Michah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, 6 Beerah his son, whom [⁴resettled ¹Tiglath-pileser ²king ³of Assyria] -- he was ruler of Reuben. 7 And his brethren of his fatherland in their distribution according to their generations -- the ruler Jeiel, and Zechariah, 8 and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel, he dwelt in Aroer, even unto Nebo and Baal-meon. 9 And [²according to ³the east ¹he dwelt] unto the entrance of the wilderness of the river Euphrates; for [²cattle ¹their] multiplied in land of Gilead. 10 And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites, and they fell by their hand, and they dwelt in their tents upon all the face of the east parts of Gilead. 11 and the sons of Gad dwelt over against them at the land of Bashan unto Salcah. 12 Joel the ruler, and Shapham the second, and Jaanai was the scribe, and Shaphat in Bashan, 13 and their brethren according to the houses of their families -- Michael, Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zia, and Heber -- seven. 14 These are the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz, 15 son of Abdiel, son of Guni, ruler of the house of the families. 16 And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan, and in her towns, and in in all the places round about Sharon, unto the exit. 17 All the traced descent in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel. 18 The sons of Reuben and Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, of the sons of the forces, men lifting shield and sword, and stretching the bow, and being taught war -- forty and four thousand and seven hundred and sixty, going forth unto the battle array. 19 And they made war with the Hagarites, and Jeturites, and Nepishites, and Nodabeans. 20 And they were called to aid over them, and [²were delivered up ³into ⁴their hand ¹the Hagarites], and all the ones with them; for to God they yelled in the battle, and he heeded them, for they relied upon him. 21 And they captured their possessions; camels -- fifty thousand, and sheep -- two hundred and fifty thousand, and donkeys -- two thousand, and lives of men -- a hundred thousand. 22 [⁴slain ¹For ²many ³fell], because [³was of ⁴God ¹the ²war]. And they dwelt there instead of them until the resettlement. 23 And the half of the tribe of Manasseh lived in the land; from Bashan unto Baal Hermon, and Senir, and mount Hermon they were multiplied. 24 And these were the rulers of the house of their families -- Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel; men mighty in strength, [²men ¹famous], rulers according to the house of their families. 25 And they annulled allegiance with the God of their fathers, and they committed harlotry after the gods of the peoples of the land, which God removed from in front of them. 26 And [⁴roused up ¹the ²God ³of Israel] the spirit of Pul king of the Assyrians, and the spirit of Tiglath-Pileser king of the Assyrians. And he resettled Reuben, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh. And he led them into Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and unto the river Gozan, unto this day.
